JAIPUR: Kota authorities taped 52 suicides by trainees, including 27 registered with different coaching centres, in between January 2019 to December 2022.
The optimum variety of suicides in coaching centres, at 15, remained in 2022.
In reaction to a question in the state assembly by Pana Chand Meghwal, MLA, looking for details of the number of suicides by students and their causes in the Kota department, the Rajasthan federal government responded in a written reply that 53 events were recorded in the four-year period, including 52 in Kota and 1 in Baran.
These include 16 suicides by college students and 10 by school trainees, the rest being trainees from training centres. The report lists four reasons behind suicides by training institute students - absence of self-esteem due to poor efficiency in tests at training centres, pressure of adult expectations, physical and mental stress (total scenario) and, last but not least, financial restrictions, blackmail, and love affairs.
The federal government put together the report based on info submitted by the local administration and the cops.
In a lot of cases, students dont leave any suicide notes, requiring us to carry an extreme investigation to determine the factors behind the cases.
The reasons have been finalised after examining several suicides from the past many years, a police officer based in Kota said.Year 2022 was among the worst with 15 suicide cases (in training institutes), over 65% of them from October to December.
The highest variety of trainees who died by suicide were from Bihar at 4, followed by those from Chhattisgarh at 3.
If the report is to be believed then the greatest contributor is low self-confidence due to poor marks in tests by coaching institutes.
It is frequently seen that tests are handled a weekly basis, which strikes hard the average and below-average trainees.
If the tests can not be gotten rid of, they should be followed by a counselling session for trainees.
Likewise, parents or guardians need to be kept notified about the results, Puneet Sharma, a professional on education who has worked on programmes in de-stressing trainees, said.In 2018, the state federal government came out with comprehensive standards for Kota training institutes, which doesnt appear to have had an effect on the quantum of suicides though. In a quote to counter the menace, the federal government is set to table a brand-new law, The Rajasthan Coaching Institutes (Control and Regulation) Bill, to attend to the problems and problems causing stress and suicides, in the present assembly session. The expense proposes a necessary aptitude test at the start of admissions into training institutes, with the results to be shown parents and guardians.
This will sift out students who have no ability for engineering or medication courses from taking admission into training institutes, it is thought.
