BENGALURU: Isro is preparing for a difficult experiment of controlled re-entry of a decommissioned low Earth orbiting satellite-- Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1)-- on March 7.

MT1 was released on October 12, 2011, as a joint satellite endeavor of Isro and the French space firm, CNES, for tropical weather condition and climate studies.

Based on the area agency, an uninhabited location in the Pacific Ocean in between 5 ° S to 14 ° S latitude and 119 ° W to 100 ° W longitude has actually been determined as the targeted re-entry zone for MT1.

And, considering that August 2022, 18 orbit manoeuvres have been carried out to progressively decrease the satellites orbit.

The last two de-boost burns followed by the ground impact are anticipated to occur between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm on March 7 and Isro said aero-thermal simulations have program no big pieces of the satellites are most likely to endure the aerothermal heating during the re-entry.

Although the objective life initially depended on three years, the satellite continued to supply important data services for more than a decade supporting regional and worldwide climate designs till 2021, Isro said. The UN inter-agency area debris co-ordination committee (IADC) area particles mitigation standards advise de-orbiting a low Earth orbit (LEO) object at its end-of-life, ideally through managed re-entry to a safe effect zone, or by bringing it to an orbit where the orbital life time is less than 25 years.

It is also recommended to perform passivation of on-board energy sources to reduce the threat of any post-mission unexpected break-up.

The orbital life time of MT1, weighing about 1,000 kg, would have been more than 100 years in its 20 deg inclined operational orbit of 867 km altitude.

About 125kg on-board fuel stayed unutilised at its end-of-mission that might position risks for accidental separation.

This left-over fuel was approximated to be enough to achieve a totally managed climatic re-entry to impact an unoccupied area in the Pacific Ocean, Isro said.It added that regulated re-entries include de-orbiting to very low elevations to ensure impact occurs within a targeted safe zone which usually, big satellites/rocket bodies which are likely to survive aero-thermal fragmentation upon re-entry are made to undergo controlled re-entry to restrict ground casualty threat.

However, all such satellites are particularly designed to undergo regulated re-entry at end-of-life.

MT1 was not created for EOL operations through controlled re-entry that made the whole workout incredibly difficult.

In addition, the on-board restraints of the aged satellite, where several systems had actually lost redundancy and showed abject performance, and preserving subsystems under harsher ecological conditions at much lower than originally created orbital altitude contributed to the functional intricacies, Isro said.

Ingenious workarounds were executed by the operations group based on the study, considerations, and exchanges amongst the objective, operations, flight characteristics, aerodynamics, propulsion, controls, navigation, thermal, and other sub-system style teams across the ISRO centres, who worked in synergy to prevail over these challenges.Stating that 18 orbit manoeuvres were carried out to gradually reduce the orbit, Isro said: In between the de-orbiting, aero-braking studies at various solar panel orientations were likewise performed to get much better insights into the physical procedure of climatic drag impacting the orbital decay of the satellite.

The final de-boost technique has actually been designed after taking into consideration a number of constraints, consisting of visibility of the re-entry trace over ground stations, ground impact within the targeted zone, and allowed operating conditions of subsystems, especially the optimum deliverable thrust and the optimum firing period of the thrusters.
