CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday charged the Karnataka government with giving wrong information in its letter to Union jal shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat that Cauvery delta had adequate groundwater and Tamil Nadu would get adequate rainfall in the northeast monsoon.

The upper riparian state also had released "baseless" reports, stating that Tamil Nadu's demand was unreasonable, and it had increased its irrigation area, the chief minister said.

All party MPs from Tamil Nadu led by water resources minister Duraimurugan would present a memorandum to the Union jal shakti minister in Delhi, urging him not to consider such "false statements" of Karnataka, the chief minister said in a statement.

"Since the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) predicted normal rainfall in the Karnataka Cauvery basin for the 15 days, beginning September 13 based on the IMD forecast, the memorandum will urge Union minister to advise the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to order Karnataka to release at the rate of 12,500 cusecs daily to Tamil Nadu.

Also, Karnataka should be appropriately instructed to supply the quantum specified by the CWMA/CWRC in due course," Stalin said.

After a long legal battle in the Cauvery dispute, the monthly schedule of deliveries by the Karnataka government at Biligundlu, the inter-state border, was specified based on the order of the Supreme Court in 2018.

The states have to share water based on pro-rata basis during distress year as per the final award of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal and verdict of the Supreme Court.

In the current water year, TN realised only 38.4tmcft as against the stipulated 103.5tmcft as on September 14, leaving a deficit of 65.1tmcft.

"Considering the storage of 69.25tmcft, IMD's normal rainfall report, and water to be availed as per Supreme Court order, the Mettur reservoir was opened on June 12 for cultivation of kuruvai and preparatory work for long-term samba crop," the CM said.

Since the Karnataka government had not released Tamil Nadu's share even proportionately and the CWMA and the CWRC, which were constituted as per the orders of the Supreme Court, were unable to resolve the issue, the TN government filed a petition before the Supreme Court on August 14.
