Sri Lankas recession has deepened the threat of food insecurity, a report launched by the World Food Programme (WFP) revealed.Accordingly, while 36% of households are food insecure, 76% have turned to food-based coping methods, WFP stated.Despite having stayed at relatively stabilized levels over the previous 3 months, food security levels still stay concerningly high the report showed, with nearly eight in 10 homes routinely relying on food-based coping methods and over 5 in ten families pawning products or formally obtaining money in order to eat.
Food prices also remain a primary concern for nine out ten households.

With minimal purchasing power, over 50% of households are purchasing food on credit.
Intake of appropriate diet plans remains low.
Thirty 5 percent of households are facing insufficient food consumption, with lots of consuming far less diverse and nutritious diets , the report read, stressing that the crisis continues to disproportionately impact different sectors of society.
Female-headed households (44%) are faring worse than male-headed homes, while those in the estate areas (43%) regularly experience higher levels of acute food insecurity than those in urban and backwoods.
Food insecurity saw an increase of 4% in October, compared to the figures seen in September, with almost half of the households (48%) in the Southern province being considered food insecure, followed carefully by Sabaragamuwa province (45%).
Those in the East and the North taped the lowest food insecurity scores in October, with the previous having actually recorded a score of 26%, and the latter being available in just a portion lower at 25%.
Six out of 9 provinces saw a rise in food insecurity in between September and October, namely Uva, Southern, North Central, Central, North Western and Eastern provinces, while there was a decrease in food insecurity in the Northern province of 8 portion points from September.
