Mozilla turns to new revenue streams from VPN, Amazon

Mozilla launched new money-making projects this month, new attempts to diversify revenue, which relies almost entirely on payments from search providers - notably, browser rival Google.

Starting today, some Firefox users will see in-browser advertisements for a VPN (virtual private network) service that encrypts all traffic and routes it through a secure server.

"Across numerous studies we've consistently heard from our users that they want Firefox to protect their privacy on public networks like cafes and airports," contended Chris More, product lead of what Mozilla calls "Firefox Growth," in an October 22 post to a company blog.

Oracle rolls out blockchain-based business apps

Oracle has announced a suite of SaaS applications based on its Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service for the purpose of tracing and tracking supply chains through a transparent distributed ledger.

The four new cloud-based apps, unveiled at Oracle's OpenWorld conference this week, are aimed at providing end-to-end traceability of transported goods, confirming the origins of the parts that make up those products and creating an auditable log for warranty and liability claims. One application, an intelligent "cold chain" service, tracks temperature-controlled products in a supply chain, such as pharmaceuticals and food, integrating with IoT devices embedded in those shipments.

Pilot fish is a couple months into his new job when he's given the task of "re-skinning" an existing e-commerce site for a client.

"I was given a mockup by the designer and that was about it," says fish. "No problem, I figured, I'll just contact the client, get their existing template and get to work.

"That's when I learned the client was expecting a complete replacement of their current e-commerce system, not just a re-skin. My boss confirmed that's what our company's owner promised."

That's not scope creep -- it's more like scope leap. And it's only the beginning, as the owner keeps making increasingly extravagant promises to the client.
