TEHRAN-- The Iranian cops have recently arrested six illegal excavators in Sari, the capital of the northern province of Mazandaran, a senior police authorities in charge of securing cultural heritage, has said.The implicated individuals were traced and lastly arrested after authorities received reports from cultural heritage fanatics and local people about their misbehaviours, CHTN quoted Mohammadreza Kordan as stating on Saturday.Some digging tools were taken from the culprits, who were handed over to the judicial system for additional examination, the official added.Sandwiched between the towering Alborz range of mountains and the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran has a rich yet turbulent history.
An early civilization thrived at the beginning of the first millennium BC in Mazandaran (Tabarestan).
Its insecure eastern and southeastern borders were crossed by Mongol intruders in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Cossacks assaulted the area in 1668 but were repulsed.
It was ceded to the Russian Empire by a treaty in 1723, but the Russians were never ever protected in their occupation.
The area was brought back to Iran under the Qajar dynasty.The northern area of the region includes lowland together with the Caspian and upland along the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains.
Marshy backlands dominate the seaside plain, and extensive gravel fans fringe the mountains.
