The Apple DEP flaw explained & and how to bolster security

On Thursday, researchers disclosed a vulnerability in Apple's Device Enrollment Program (DEP) that could allow malicious actors to compromise a corporate network. The issue, however, is more a process flaw than a functional weakness in Apple's services, devices or encryption mechanisms. (It exploits the serial number of a corporate device to gain access to a company's mobile device management (MDM) service.)

IDG Contributor Network: Windows Virtual Desktop + Microsoft Managed Desktop revelation in the making

[Disclosure: Microsoft is a client of the author.]

One of the interesting observations I have is how people lock down on an experience with a vendor and how that perception remains unchanged unless something significant is done to change it. In context, this means that often when I hear someone talk about Microsoft Windows problems and unreliability, they may be talking about anything from Windows 95 to Windows Vista…or whenever they last used the product.

But they act as if they are talking about Windows 10, which is vastly different & even more so the farther back their experience goes. (I&m establishing this as a foundation because things are about to change massively again.)

Google deals with fallout over Chrome auto sign-in

Google will try to tamp down blowback from linking log-ins of its services with Chrome by adding an option to disable the automatic sign-in, the company said Wednesday.

The change will debut in Chrome 70, now slated to ship the week of Oct. 14-20. "While we think sign-in consistency will help many of our users, we're adding a control that allows users to turn off linking web-based sign-in with browser-based sign-in," Zach Koch, a Chrome senior product manager, wrote in a Sept. 26 post to a company blog.

Koch cited user feedback as the trigger for the upcoming change to Chrome. "We deeply appreciate all of the passionate users who have engaged with us on this," he said.

Turning old PCs into new Chromebooks

Every organization, big or small, has a hidden asset: Old laptops and desktops that have outlived their usefulness, are too slow for todaysoftware or use less secure operating systems. Admittedly, that doesn&t sound like anything of great value. But iteasy to breathe new life into those machines by converting them into Chromebooks.

Because the Chrome OS is lighter than Windows and macOS and requires fewer resources, older systems that bog down with Windows 10 or macOS Mojave often work just fine as Chromebooks. That means that systems with slower CPUs, less RAM and smaller hard drives — the ones that no one in your organization wants to use — can get a second lease on life.

"I wonder which help desk/IT-related category I should assign to this one. Would this be considered a Java issue

"I'm currently scanning it for malware and viruses. No one wants a widespread outbreak.
